VOLUNTEER ATTORNEY PROGRAM

VOLUNTEER ATTORNEY PROGRAM
Volunteer attorneys are always needed at Legal Assistance of Madison County to represent clients and assist at the Legal Advice Clinic.

CLIENT REPRESENTATION
Most of the Volunteer cases allocated are Family Law Dissolutions. Our office will not refer any dissolutions with children to Volunteer Attorneys, unless, of course, you would prefer to gain experience by taking these types of cases. Volunteer attorneys also represent our clients, or provide brief services/legal advice, in cases related to landlord/tenant issues, consumer, and/or debtor/creditor issues. They also prepare simple wills and Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, and help collect Court-awarded attorney fees for LAWC.

LEGAL ADVICE CLINIC
The volunteer attorney will give advice to pre-registered customers in the area of family law. If needed, the customers will have filled out their pro-se forms prior to meeting with you. You will meet with the customers at the Self-Help center at the Washington County Government Center in Stillwater.

Currently volunteers are needed on Tuesday Afternoons from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

MALPRACTICE INSURANCE
Our malpractice insurance will cover you so long as you are a member of our Volunteer Attorney panel in your capacity as a Volunteer Attorney at the legal advice clinic or when representing a client for our office.

LOW-COST CLE’S
Volunteer Attorneys are also able to attend, at reduced fees, certain CLE courses. These CLE programs are related to poverty law, such as child support, custody, paternity, landlord - tenant law, consumer issues, and government appeals work and are offered through the Minnesota Legal Services Coalition.
